LOCAL LEGENDS:  folklore, culture & you

Stories are wonderful!

They form part of our understanding of the world, connect us in interesting and creative ways, and re-enchant the very environment we live in.

The North-East of Scotland is rich with stories, folklore and legends. We would like to celebrate these stories, and explore their role in our contemporary world – and we need your help!
The Local Legends event is being organised by a team at Robert Gordon University and is part of a funded project for the ESRC Festival of Social Sciences.

We are collecting your local folklore and stories from across the North-East of Scotland and will be exhibiting these at an event to celebrate our folklore heritage. At the same time, we will be exploring how folklore connects us to people, culture and the landscape around us.
Whether it be old spooky houses, tales of witches, the ghostly figure that haunts a nearby stream, or anything unusually strange or wonderful please do get in touch to share these stories with us.
“We would love to hear your folklore stories! Perhaps these are stories you were told as a child about the local spooky woods, superstitions from your community or tales of fairies and creatures that inhabit the nearby hills. Whether these are well known stories, or ones unique to your area we would love to hear your interpretation and memories of these being told.”

"We wid be fair trickit tae git yer heirskip tales!  Aiblins, they micht be tales fit ye wis telt is a bairn aboot the wids thit fleggit ye, aul freets fae yer airt, or tales o emmachs an craiturs thit bide in the hills.  Whither they maun be weel-kent tales, or anely tae yer ain airt we wid be affa gled tae git yer thochts aboot fit ye myne on these gittin telt.”

'Local Legends: folklore, culture & you' is a Robert Gordon University project supported by the Economic & Social Research Council.
