The White Lady of Edzell Castle
Set in the village of Edzell, the remains of the red sandstone Edzell Castle is believed to be haunted by the ghost of a White Lady. The lady is reputedly the spirit of Catherine Campbell, second wife of David Lindsay the 9th Earl of Crawford.
The story tells that in 1578 on thinking Catherine had died she was buried in the Lindsay burial aisle of Edzell Old Church. However, after her burial Catherine regained consciousness when a sextant tried to steal her jewellery from her hand. Dressed in her white burial gown she walked back to the castle gates.
However, out of fear at the pale ghost-like figure seen before them the guards would not let her in, and sadly Catherine died that night from exposure. Catherine’s ghost is said to haunt the castle grounds and the Lindsay burial aisle. Her apparition has been witnessed by staff at the visitor centre, and also the general public passing by.
