Guestrow is one of Aberdeen’s oldest streets and is located opposite Marischal College running off from Broad Street. If you walk up Broad Street you will see a plaque for Guestrow on the side of the building which the pub Illicit Still is located in.
There is no specific story associated with Guestrow but the origin of its name has caused some controversy over the years. A popular theory is that Guestrow, pronounced ‘Gaistra’ in the Doric dialect, translates as the ‘street of spirits or ghosts’.
The reason for this is believed to be linked to the streets position which at the time of being built would have overlooked the St Nicholas Kirkyard.
